NANPA has not yet authorized the use of 494 area code. Area Code 494 is officially planned to be a General Purpose area code that will be assigned to a geographic location in North America (the United States, Canada, and a few Caribbean countries) if needed.
According to an October 2020 analysis, the current numbering plan will be exhausted after 2050. As a result, area code 494 is also reserved for future use as an Expansion code if it becomes necessary to expand the current 10-digit dialing format. The N9X (that is, all area codes with ‘9’ as the middle digit) range of area codes is the most commonly proposed method of expanding to longer-than-ten digit numbers.
Even though 494 is registered with NANPA, it is not a valid area code because it has not yet been assigned to a geographical region. Because phone number 494-xxx-xxx does not exist, consider any call from area code 494 to be spam.
