Area code 181: All you need to know about it

February 21, 2023 by Jordan Newman

area code 181

There is no area code “181” in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which encompasses the United States, Canada, the majority of the Caribbean, and some Pacific islands. NANP area codes have three digits and range from 201 to 999, excluding numbers that begin with 0 or 1.

Area codes cannot begin with the digits “0” or “1” in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). This is because the NANP reserves the digits “0” and “1” for special purposes.

The digit “0” is designated for calls that require operator assistance. For instance, if you need help making a phone call, dial “0,” and an operator will assist you.

Within the NANP, the digit “1” is reserved for long-distance calls. To make a long-distance call within the NANP, enter “1” before the area code and contact number.

The NANP makes sure that area codes and phone numbers are easy to tell apart and that callers can get important services like operator help and long-distance calls. It does this by setting aside the numbers “0” and “1” for special purposes.

If you received a telephone call from a number with the area code “181,” the number was most likely spoofed, which means the caller intentionally falsified their caller ID info to appear to be calling from a different number.
